Due to the recent lockdown restrictions, this event has now been moved from Nov 25/26 to Dec 2/3.

Jazz singer / pianist, bandleader, presenter and producer, Robin Phillips, returns to the Cambridge Jazz Festival for the fifth year in 2020, presenting his ‘Lost Verses’ project, at two dinner jazz events at the Gonville Hotel.

Scheduled to be two of only a few live performances with an audience in the festival programme, Robin will perform with his quintet, performing music from his latest album ‘Re-Versed.’

£45 - 3 course meal - Max 6 tickets per group, only 30 tickets available per night

The ticket price includes a three-course meal created by the Gonville Hotel served prior to the performance. Starter options include a seared beef carpaccio or a wild mushroom and truffle velouté. Mains options include a fillet of beef, pan-seared duck breast or Autumn vegetable wellington, and desserts include chocolate brownie, crème brulee or cheese selection.

‘Re-Versed’ is the latest album by UK jazz singer / pianist Robin Phillips and delves into the world of the lost verses of classic jazz standards, ‘re-versing’ them in a series of new arrangements. The ‘sectional verses’ of jazz standards are introductions before the more commonly-known refrain starts. Originally used as a link between the spoken and sung parts of a scene in musical theatre, these verses often explain and set up the story which is to unfold in the main part of the tune. Many of the verses have been lost over time and are no longer performed as part of the song.

Robin Phillips - keys and vocals

Jihad Darwish - upright bass

Alex Best - drums

Sam Miles - sax

Neil Cowlan - guitar

The festival is also featuring Robin’s new music road trip documentary, in a special online streamed screening on Thursday 19th November. ‘Back To The Source’ follows Robin on the trip of a lifetime as he rides a Harley Davidson motorbike from Chicago to New Orleans, retracing the path of jazz and blues music in America, to better understand these artforms, their history, and how they exist today. During the trip he sits in with local bands at performances and interviews local personalities to get more insight about each place visited.
