Combining jazz tradition with songs Maria grew up singing in her childhood Slovak folklore group, TOPOĽANA is a jazz folk fusion sextet packed with some of the freshest young talent on the London jazz scene.
Since the band formed in 2016, they have gigged extensively around the UK, Slovakia and Czech Republic, building an enthusiastic audience and even reaching the finals for “BJD 2019” Young Talents competition. During their last tour in June 2022 (UK, SK, AT, CZ, PL), they recorded their debut album, which will be coming out next Spring. At their performance at The Vortex Jazz Club, they will be performing music from this upcoming album.
“An enticing blend of woodwinds & Maria’s flute with occasional heartfelt vocalising tracing Slovak folk melodies crossing over into jazz sensibilities… a fresh sound enthusiatically received!” The Spice of Life tea
“High quality performance full of emotions and sincere love and devotion to music” Dávid Oláh, jazz.sk
“It’s the blend of folklore, traditional jazz phrases and eagerness of young musicians that make Topoľana unique” Soňa Juríková, SkJazz
Rebecca Nash presents ‘Redefining Element 78’ - feat Nick Malcolm on trumpet.
Redefining Element 78, is a brand-new work by British pianist-composer Rebecca Nash, commissioned by Bristol Jazz Festival and released on Whirlwind Recordings. Firmly established as one of the most exciting contemporary jazz composers/band leaders in the UK, pianist Rebecca Nash is now garnering an international reputation for her distinctive sound, full of artistry and heart.
Her music blends bold melodies with electronic elements and grooves, placing them within ethereal harmonic soundscapes. The suite, a collection of eight pieces is curiously centred around precious metals; Platinum, Osmium, Rhodium, Iridium, Ruthenium, and Palladium. The music's excitement comes from a creative tension between detailed through-composed sections and large swathes of free improvisation. The deep sense of trust and connection between Nick and Rebecca, combined with expansive, other-worldly compositions leads to spontaneous, daring, and unpredictable music making.
